Drama

“All the world’s a stage” William Shakespeare

Throughout KS3, 4 & 5 students work collaboratively to produce theatre that provokes thought, challenges performers and engages audiences.  Our diverse and inclusive curriculum allows students to study a range of concepts that engage them in deep discussion; along with developing their understanding and empathy, and themes and issues explored in contemporary society.

In KS3 students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of characters and emotions, and how to communicate this through the application of skills and techniques. We explore the theatre of Commedia Dell’Arte, Greek Chorus and Physical Theatre to deepen their knowledge in a range of performance styles.  As part of the varied curriculum, students will also study plays such as ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ and ‘Blood Brothers’, along with a range of influential practitioners to explore acting methods and styles.

At KS4 & 5 students follow a two-year course which challenges them in a range of contemporary concepts and pushes students to their theatrical limits, as well as engaging them in both devising and scripted work.  Students gain knowledge in technical and design elements of live performance, having the opportunity to watch live professional works.  Performances we have seen include; ‘The Woman in Black’, ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Yerma’.  Currently we study a range of contemporary and classic plays including; ‘DNA’ by Dennis Kelly, ‘Fences’ by August Wilson and ‘Woyzeck’ by Georg Buchner, focusing on playwright intentions and bringing performance texts to life.

To support the curriculum, we regularly invite established practitioners and theatre company’s such as Frantic Assembly and the West End Cast of ‘The Lion King’ to perform and work with our young people.  Drama inspires and motivates our students enabling them to build confidence and self-esteem, communicate effectively with others, and offers a creative outlet to students who have a love of performing.
