English

At North Birmingham Academy, we aim to empower students through a broad and challenging English curriculum which is rich in the skills and knowledge needed to prepare students for further learning or later employment. The course supports students with the independent thinking and cultural capital required to develop their independent identities and to navigate their role within society. By studying English Language and Literature, pupils are given the opportunity to consider the perspectives of others through reading, whilst expressing their own viewpoints effectively through writing and speech.

Our curriculum provides students with the opportunity to:

  • read a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts from a range of authors and genres, considering the importance of the writers’ perspectives in relation to their societies;
  • develop their independent reading skills and confidence by breaking down text to consider both explicit and implicit meanings;
  • articulate ideas about a range of topics shared discussion and debate, developing confidence in speaking and presenting to others;
  • develop cultural capital to help remove barriers to achievement in school, future learning and the world of work;
  • write clearly, fluently and accurately in plain English, showing flair and creativity where appropriate;
  • secure written accuracy through the study of grammar, vocabulary and adapting writing to audience and purpose;
  • develop their personal resilience, confidence and independence to contribute to wider life of the school, local community and the wider environment.
