Sixth form curriculum

At North Birmingham Academy Sixth Form we offer a broad and balanced curriculum that not only best prepares our students for their next steps into university or the world of work and work-based apprenticeships but it also provides a wealth of opportunities outside of the classroom to encourage inquiring minds, promote initiative, creativity and independence throughout their sixth form career.

At NBA Sixth Form students have the option of choosing an Academic route which includes mainly A level courses, a Vocational route which consists of OCR Cambridge Nationals and BTEC qualifications or a blended approach of both Academic and Vocational qualifications. All routes adequately prepare our students for the range of Post-18 choices available and ensure that the needs of our students are met.

Students also have the opportunity to complete an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). This course provides students with the opportunity to research and create a project piece about a topic of study that they are passionate about, this qualification gives students the opportunity to earn additional UCAS points for university and helps to develop vital independent learning skills.

All of our study programmes are designed to provide students with a structured and challenging learning programme that supports their development and progression in line with their career plans. Study programmes are individually tailored but will typically combine the elements below:

  1. substantial qualifications that stretch students and prepare them for education at the next level or for employment
  2. English and maths where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade 4
  3. work experience to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions
  4. other non-qualification activity to develop students’ character, broader skills, attitudes and confidence, and to support progression.
