The Pastoral Team – North Birmingham Academy
The Pastoral Team at North Birmingham Academy strives to give help and support to students as well as providing information, advice and guidance to them. We always work in close partnership with teachers, parents, carers and other specialist agencies in order to provide the best opportunities for our young people to develop and succeed.
We offer a safe place where individuals are valued, listened to and supported to overcome any barriers to learning that includes negative emotions, low self-confidence, difficult family circumstances, problems with friendships and relationships, concerns about transferring from one key stage to another particularly primary to secondary school, concerns about changes in their lives and difficulties with organisation.
The team always endeavours to identify any concerns or issues at the earliest possible opportunity and attempts to remove any of these barriers to learning which may be preventing our students from reaching their full potential.
The Pastoral Team also offers help and support in the following areas:
- Behaviour support/management
- Emotional help (including anger management and counselling)
- Academic support (including intervention work, extended work experience specialised timetables and programmes)
- Restorative Approaches
- Peer mediation
- Links to specialist external agencies when needed – the Local Authority social inclusion team, child and family support, etc.
- Mentoring and working with motivational groups
- Family support
We pride ourselves on knowing and understanding our young people well and working alongside the teaching and support staff to develop positive relationships with them and their families. Responses to any issues are prompt and difficulties experienced are discussed and resolved in the best possible way.
This includes helping them manage difficulties in their lives, helping them to understand about being a good friend and co-operating with others, raising their self-esteem, motivating them to be successful and achieve, encouraging them to be more self-sufficient and independent, listening to their views, producing a plan of work towards agreed goals and supporting them to organise their time and work in school and at home.
The pastoral system is the responsibility of the Assistant Headteacher, supported by Heads of Year and form tutors who are always the first point of contact for students, parent/ carers regarding any concerns or issues.
We also benefit from an extended team of a SENCO, an A2L Manager, Attendance Officers, Intervention Support Assistants. The experience and diversity of the team guarantees that our young people are always provided with the best academic and emotional support. We continuously monitor their progress in all aspects of school life.
